Death has long been a preoccupation of philosophers, and this is especially so today. The Oxford Handbook of the Philosophy of Death contains chapters that cover current philosophical thinking of death-related topics across the entire range of the discipline. These include metaphysical topics—such as the nature of death, the possibility of an afterlife, the nature of persons, and how our thinking about time affects what we think about death—as well as axiological topics, such as whether death is bad for its victim, what makes it bad to die, what attitude it is fitting to take toward death, the possibility of posthumous harm, and the desirability of immortality. The chapters also explore the views of ancient philosophers such as Aristotle, Plato, and Epicurus on topics related to the philosophy of death, and questions in normative ethics, such as what makes killing wrong when it is wrong, and whether it is wrong to kill fetuses, non-human animals, combatants in war, and convicted murderers.

Death and Dying in Ireland, Britain, and Europe provides a unique new perspective on Irish history and is a truly multi-disciplinary and dynamic approach to an emerging style called the 'new social history.' It is a pioneering book that presents a history of death and dying in Ireland and Europe, from pre-history to the 20th century, focusing on virtually every era and from a diverse and broad range of perspectives. Martyrdom is examined through the phenomenon of the hunger strike and its impact on Irish life, and in particular, the Cork and Brixton hunger strikes of 1920. The history of

Palliative care of respiratory disease is often complex because of the high level of symptoms experienced by these patients and the variable and sometimes unpredictable trajectories of these diseases. It is often most appropriate to integrate palliative care into the multidisciplinary team with specialist palliative care clinicians working alongside the respiratory team. This encourages a focus on symptom management, supportive care and quality of life at an earlier stage in the disease process, and can facilitate discussions about advanced care planning and end of life issues. Integrated Palliative Care of Respiratory Disease brings together the knowledge, skills and attitudes of specialists in both respiratory and palliative medicine to focus on the palliative care of patients with respiratory diseases. The book begins with an overview of palliative care principles in relation to the palliation of chronic progressive lung disease, then delves into the causation and management of specific respiratory symptoms, and concludes with an overview of the management of the major lung diseases. This comprehensive text deals not only with end of life care but also with symptom control and supportive care to improve the quality of life of those living with advanced progressive lung disease. This book is an invaluable reference for doctors, trainees and clinical nurse specialists in respiratory and palliative medicine, and would be of interest to anyone who wishes to gain a better understanding of the complex nature of palliative care in respiratory disease.

People with advancing neurological disease face increasing physical symptoms, along with psychosocial and spiritual issues affecting both themselves and their families and carers. There is increasing awareness that the end of life in neurological disease can be anticipated and recognised, taking into account certain key features of disease progression, and the associated issues can be addressed. The individual can prepare for future changes in their health, and be in a stronger position to influence or direct the care they receive. End of Life Care in Neurological Disease encourages health and social care professionals to become closely involved in the care of these people and their families, to maintain and maximise quality of life and plan ahead. This book addresses the principles and practice of end of life care for neurological disease, is written with a clinical, multidisciplinary focus, and is enriched with detailed case studies. This book is an accessible text for the multidisciplinary team in specialist palliative care, and will also be of interest to healthcare professionals in neurological services, including neurologists and neurology specialist nurses, rehabilitation services, general practitioners and community nurses. As care professionals, we are in a powerful position to help those who are living with advanced neurological disease and improve their quality of life and death.

In Imago Mortis: Mediating Images of Death in Late Medieval Culture , Ashby Kinch argues for the affirmative quality of late medieval death art and literature, providing a new, interdisciplinary approach to a well-known body of material. He demonstrates the surprising and effective ways that late medieval artists appropriated images of death and dying as a means to affirm their artistic, social, and political identities. The book dedicates each of its three sections to a pairing of a visual convention (deathbed scenes, the Three Living and Three Dead, and the Dance of Death) and a Middle English literary text (Hoccleve’s Lerne for to die , Audelay’s Three Dead Kings , and Lydgate’s Dance of Death ).

What is the situation of people who are unable to make decisions due to a physical or mental change? This book gives impulses and answers to many ethical, economical and mainly legal questions which arise and are associated with the end of life. A universal human rights approach and the analysis of the relevant European law are put in front of the presentation of the national legal situations in Italy and Germany. The most topical and controversial issues concerning advance care planning are presented as well as a transnational economic analysis on the effects of advance care planning.
